Summer Beach Morning Routine

A Summer Beach Morning Routine: The Architecture of an Unhurried Day

The first thing I do every morning has absolutely nothing to do with coffee, though most people naturally assume it does. Instead, it is water—poured into a heavy, sweating glass pitcher before my feet have even fully committed to being awake. Over the years, I have learned that however the morning begins is precisely how the rest of the day tends to unfold, and I would far rather step into my day feeling hydrated, clear-headed, and grounded than rushed and behind before I have even done a single other thing.

Once that hydration ritual is complete, the French doors are flung wide open to the veranda, letting the house breathe in the early summer air before the high Florida heat has had the chance to settle in and make itself unwelcome. There is a remarkably narrow, precious window of time at dawn when the salt air carries a crisp, cool sweetness, and I have learned not to waste a single second of it by lingering in bed a moment longer than necessary.

The Made Bed & The Morning Alchemy

Before any other productive act is permitted to happen within my space, the bed gets made, completely without exception. A day that begins with an unmade bed has always felt unfinished to me before it has even properly commenced, and a pristine summer morning deserves better than to carry that unraveled feeling into its light. Smooth sheets, plumped pillows, and a crisp linen coverlet take less than a single minute to arrange, yet it instantly sets a tone of order, elegance, and peace for everything that follows.

From there, I move to the sunlit kitchen for a quiet ritual of pure nourishment. Rather than grabbing things on the go, I treat my morning supplements like a curated apothecary routine—pouring a small glass of probiotic-rich, chilled kefir, setting out my daily vitamins, and enjoying a spoonful of vanilla-infused Coconut Cult yogurt from a small stoneware bowl. It is a slow, intentional moment of putting my health first, fueling my body with clean, vibrant ingredients while the house is still perfectly quiet.

The Beach Walk with the Morning Brew

With my wellness routine complete, I prepare my morning drink. Lately, it is just as often a warm cup of Ryze mushroom coffee, a switch I initially made almost on a whim and have ended up genuinely enjoying far more than I ever expected to.

With a warm ceramic mug in hand, Charlie and I head out together for our daily pilgrimage—just the two of us, stepping onto the cool, unmarred sand when the sky is still a hazy canvas of pastel pinks and blues. Sipping a warm brew while walking along the shoreline, with the ocean sighing rhythmically beside us, is a feeling that is genuinely medicinal for the nervous system.

Unlike my intense marathon training schedules, this specific walk has never been about pace or exertion; it is something closer to clearing out a sacred, empty space in my own head before the day has the chance to crowd it with noise. In fact, more of my best ideas for Noellie have arrived during these quiet stretches along the water, completely unannounced and sparkling, than have ever arrived while I was actually sitting at a desk forcing myself to think of them—which I take as absolute proof that the truly brilliant ideas only show up when you have finally stopped chasing them so hard.

Prayer and Writing

Returning home from the water just as the sun fully clears the horizon signals that the moving part of the morning is officially finished, and the sitting-still part—the sacred space where actual thinking happens—is about to begin. This is the exact pocket of the morning that I protect most fiercely, the time I am least willing to let anything or anyone encroach upon.

Prayer always comes first—unhurried, deeply intimate, and feeling much more like a warm conversation with God than a rigid recitation. Immediately behind it flows my creative writing, because these early, pristine hours have always been when the words come to me most fluidly, long before the rest of the world has had the opportunity to get loud and crowd them out. If I am going to write anything truly worth keeping—whether it is translating a page for Noellie Books, or drafting a line for a picture book, or even just weaving together the beginning of whatever this blog post turns into—it must happen now, in this quiet, sunlit stretch, or it very often doesn't happen well at all.

Movement & The Sacred Vessel

By the time the writing naturally winds down, the morning has beautifully earned some form of physical movement. Depending on the day and what my training schedule happens to be asking of me, this looks like a focused Pilates session on a linen mat or an actual, rhythmic run along the coast. While it is the one part of my morning sequence that shifts the most from day to day, it always falls into the exact same position in the symphony—occurring after the quiet has already done its deep work on my soul, but before the rest of the world gets its turn to demand my attention.

The Morning Glow: A Curated Summer Skincare Ritual

The long, luxurious shower that follows my movement is where my skincare routine officially begins. I treat this step with the exact same level of serious intentionality as everything that came before it, because the way I care for my skin has never felt like a separate vanity; rather, it is a direct extension of how I tend to my entire well-being.

I approach each step slowly, turning a simple routine into a high-end, therapeutic experience that honors the canvas I present to the world:

  • The Pristine Cleanse: I begin with a gentle, milky hydrating cleanser to sweep away the morning run or the salt air, using slow, upward circular motions to awaken circulation and create a completely fresh, luminous canvas.

  • The Botanical Hydration Layer: While my skin is still slightly damp and receptive, I press a premium, nutrient-dense serum into my face and neck, allowing the active botanicals to absorb deeply, instantly plumping the skin and imparting a lit-from-within glow.

  • The Sanctuary Moisture Lock: Next, I smooth on a lightweight yet deeply nourishing barrier cream tailored specifically for the summer season, locking in the hydration without overloading the skin, leaving a finish that feels like pure silk.

  • The Invisible Shield: Finally, I never step into the Florida sun without a generous layer of high-factor, elegant sunscreen that melts into the skin completely clear, protecting my skin while maintaining that effortless, fresh-faced radiance.

Why the Architecture Matters

None of this routine is overly complicated, and absolutely very little of it is fast, but the strict adherence to the order itself is what makes the rest of the day feel like it belongs entirely to me, rather than me belonging to it.

Water before anything else. Chilled kefir and clean supplements before a made plan. A grounding wellness ritual to fuel the body, followed by a quiet walk with Charlie alongside a warm morning cup before a single word is ever committed to paper. And finally, intentional movement followed by a proper, slow skincare ritual before I ever allow myself to think about what the working world is asking of me. It is a small, quiet, and deeply romantic architecture I have built for myself over time, and by the time I actually sit down to create, I have already done the beautiful things that make the creation possible.
