Why I Created The Noellie American Heroes Program

By Rory Noelle

A Blanket and a Little Girl

I have a blanket. It is red, white, and blue, knit together by hand, and I have kept it my whole life.

I think that blanket is why I have always loved blankets. There is something about receiving one — something soft and special and made with intention — that feels like being held even when the person who loves you cannot be there. I have spent my whole life loving them. Collecting them. Giving them to the people I love most. Because to me a blanket has never just been a blanket. It has always been a way of saying: I see your heart, I hold it dear, I love you so very much.

I was young when my mom deployed after 9/11. I remember it the way children remember the things that shape them quietly — not all at once, but in pieces. I remember the house feeling different. I remember my grandma. And I remember the day a woman from the family coordination program came to the door and handed me that blanket. I don’t know her name. I don’t know if she knew what it would mean to me. But I have never forgotten her.

That blanket told me something without words. It said: we see you. We know your mom is far away. You are not alone.

Growing Up in a Military World

I grew up in a military world. My first memory is of 9/11 — of watching the TV, but also in watching my mom and in a heartbeat watching her and the people around me rise to meet it. My mom served and deployed two weeks after. Our military family from back home — and they really are family, not just a community but real, true family — gave us every kind of love and open doors and a kind of love that only people who understand sacrifice can give. I grew up surrounded by that. I grew up shaped by it.

I am proud to be American because of my mom. Because of our military family. Because of the sacrifice and the honor and the gratitude that was woven into me from the very beginning — just like that blanket.

Why This Program Was Always Meant to Exist

And so when I founded The Noellie Foundation, I always knew it would find its way here. To the children whose parents are serving far from home. To the veterans who gave everything and deserve so much more than a thank you. To the Gold Star families — who have paid a price the rest of us will never fully understand, and who should never, ever be forgotten.

The Noellie American Heroes Program exists because freedom is not free. Because I know what it feels like to be a little girl holding a handmade blanket and feeling, for just a moment, held. And because I want every child of a hero to feel that too.

This program is for them. All of them.

How You Can Be Part of It

The Noellie American Heroes Program launches officially on Flag Day, ready to benefit from the proceeds of The Noellie Americana Summer Collection. A portion of every Freedom Hoodie purchase goes directly to this program — because what you wear can be a statement of what you stand for.

To every veteran, every military family, every Gold Star family — you are not forgotten. You are seen. And you are, always, our heroes
